Our Patients: Katie in braces and
sister Whitney after braces
Congratulations on getting your braces!

Here are a few pointers and instructions to help make your orthodontic treatment more successful and pleasant:

Hard Foods: These top the "no-no list" during treatment. They can damage, loosen, or break your wires, braces and appliances. They can also delay your orthodontic treatment. Please refer to your list and be sure not to chew ice or hard candy. Apples may be cut in slices, corn should be removed from the cob; and meat should be removed from the bone and chewed on the back teeth.

Emergency Appointments: If a wire, band or bracket does come loose, you may need to be seen before your regularly scheduled appointment. Please call our office. Sometimes, there are things the patient can do to relieve the pain immediately. Please call first so we can schedule a short emergency appointment that will prevent you or other patients from having unnecessary waiting time. Please refrain from dropping in without an appointment. If a wire is poking or sticking use your wax as directed below.

Wax: Place or mold a small amount of wax over brace or wire to cover rough or irritating areas. Remove wax to eat or brush and replace if necessary.

Sore Teeth: Your teeth may be sore for a few days, and then may become loose. This is normal as they move. Rinse with warm salt water and take Tylenol for pain.

Brushing: Be sure to brush the area between the gums and braces to avoid swelling, infection, gum disease or cavities. Brush after every meal, use your WaterPik and a good medium toothbrush (Butler or Oral B). A Butler brand Proxabrush will be helpful. If an area bleeds, this may indicate an inflammation due to underbrushing or food may be trapped. Be sure to brush inflamed areas thoroughly.

Fluoride Gel: Use on clean teeth at bedtime as directed on the container. Be sure to keep teeth dry by not rinsing or eating after using. Fluoride kills germs and bacteria that cause cavities as it strengthens enamel!

Please call our office if you have questions.
