Earlier this month, we took a break from our regular programming so we could highlight the history of our field, orthodontia. Inevitably, we bit off more than we could chew in a single blog post, so we had to cut the history short. Instead of writing 2,000 odd words about the complete history of orthodontics, we elected to separate ancient and medieval practices of dentistry and orthodontia into our first blog, leaving modern orthodontics to be discussed today.

We’ll pick up where we left off — right where the United States began to get involved around the turn of the 19th century. But before we dive into the meat and potatoes of today’s blog, we’d like to take a few moments to remind our readers why we are among the top Augusta orthodontists around!

Best staff EVER!!! As you walk into the doors, you’re greeted with a friendly smile. They’re very professional, and never been disappointed. Between my daughter and I, getting braces. was the best decision. [sic] We had made, with Dr. Andrew and his team.” – Jackie S., Five Stars, Google Reviews

The Father Of Modern Orthodontics – Edward Angle

It would be difficult to discuss modern orthodontics without devoting some time to discuss the man known as the modern father of said field. Edward Angle was born in 1855 and passed in 1930. In his time on this planet, the American-born dentist transformed oral care from top to bottom. Trained in dentistry, orthodontia became his passion as he committed all his efforts to the standardization of the teaching and practice methods of orthodontia. In fact, he is the founder of the Angle School in St. Louis, alongside a plethora of other orthodontic schools across the United States.

Angle was not only responsible for the standardization of various practices and curriculum, but he also championed the framework for both the aesthetic aspect and functionality of orthodontics. Angle collaborated with artist and professor Edmund H. Wuerpel in his attempts to incorporate aesthetic knowledge in orthodontia. Further, the father of modern orthodontics standardized appliances, coined the term malocclusion (anomalies of tooth positions), and generally did more than we could write in a single blog post!

The 20th Century

Before the 1970s, which is when we at Rogers & Andrews Orthodontics opened our doors, orthodontics used anchored brackets to individual teeth, needing to wind wires around any tooth that required adjustment. This changed with the invention of dental adhesives, as orthodontists could then make the brackets stick to teeth without the use of uncomfortable wires. Additionally, gold and silver wires were replaced by stainless steel due to it being more malleable as a material alongside its cost-effectiveness.

The 21st Century

Moving right along to the 21st century, orthodontic patients have more options than anyone could have imagined 100 years ago. From traditional metal and ceramic braces to The Invisalign® System (a series of clear overlay templates called aligners using computer simulations for each patient), orthodontic appliances are now more comfortable, aesthetically pleasing, and effective than ever before!
